The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) offers classes open to all University of Arkansas students. There is no military commitment for those who want to learn about the military and participate in fun, educational activities.
Beginning ROTC classes, Military Science 1001 and 1011, are one-credit courses. They meet once a week for 50 minutes in the classroom and for a two-hour lab on Thursday afternoons. Classroom lessons cover leadership, land navigation, and basic soldier tactics.
In labs, students learn teamwork and improve their leadership skills. They conduct squad- and patrol-size missions, including reconnaissance, ambushes, and raids. They also practice land navigation and first aid.

Army ROTC trains students to become officers in the United States Army. Students who choose a military career can receive full-tuition scholarships. These scholarships provide about $16,000 a year, which is deposited directly into the student’s bank account for personal use.
The scholarships cover:
- Full tuition or room and board
- $600 each semester for books
- $420 each month for living expenses
- $100–$400 per month for students taking critical language classes
- Study abroad programs
Like other University of Arkansas students, ROTC cadets can participate in extracurricular activities. Many cadets join clubs, play intramural and intercollegiate sports, or take part in the performing arts.
